Hey, I was just playing around in PSE 5 and thought this was a pretty cool filter and wonder if anyone else has some examples.

I took a picture of an old truck box that's abandoned on a lot beside my home.

Here's the original

Then I applied the Diffused Glow filter to the image with no other adjustments.

Then I cropped it a little, added a little 'noise', and colorized it here.

I don't know, maybe this is something all of you guys are petty familiar with, but I really liked the effect and I think this was just the default settings, I didn't play with the adjustments at all. I could see this used with a child photo or something like that.......maybe I'll try that with my daughter tomorrow!

I just love the surreal look it produces.

This is my son on an old train earlier today.

Alpha8207,

I sure do like the effect on YOUR pictures. I think I must have been over-doing it when I messed around with that myself. I did not get that "soft" look you achieved. I got the "obviously over tweaked photo" look.
Whats the trick?

I very much like the effect on the photo of your son. Nicely done!

Thanks.

I saw an image another photographer had done and I believe this is what he did.

In all honesty, I still think the effect on the image of my son still is a bit much. I think I could have turned it down a little and still gotten what I wanted.

I just started playing with the filter this weekend and really haven't read on it or played too much.

A question for you real pros:

What is the filter 'really' doing and is this an effect that could have been done with film as well?

I'm not too much a fan of a lot of edits that couldn't be done with film, bt I do like this one.

There are soft focus lenses that will achieve this it think. Also you could manipulate the focus with an enlarger lens to not be as sharp. Can makes a 135mm soft focus lens. Fugi makes one for large format film as well.
