Picture was taken from the plane window on a flight from San Francisco to Houston. Showing salt pans in southern San Francisco Bay and the ghost town of Drawbridge ( the brown area where the line cross) just few miles of San Jose.
Due to variable algal concentrations, vivid colors, from pale green to bright red are created in the evaporation ponds. The color indicates the salinity of the ponds. Micro-organisms change their hues as the salinity of the pond increases. In low to mid-salinity ponds, green algae are predominant.
This is a sundial and the gnomon (pointy thing sticking out of it) creates a shadow on the dial at the proper time of the day. Since the light shines from above, there ar no time increments are located above the gnomon. The dialo has to be oriented properly on the building or it will not work.
