With a quality high speed memory card you will get 50+ images in a single burst if you hold the shutter button long enough. That's a lot but could be most useful with a telephoto lens and birds in flight some of the time. I started a little thread on burst mode and will try and get some more images up after being out over the weekend. I know you are counting down the hours but the waiting will be over soon.
My P&S on burst is a pic every other second, it seems. I learned after the first time I tried it, that it takes a very steady hand. When I was at Niagara Falls yesterday I did some burst shots, as I was watching the rapids, I talked about how much the Canon will capture such intense rage of the mighty Niagara. Is it Monday yet?

Not quite a soccer mom, but I get the impression backyard baseball is much the same.

50 images in a single burst???? Are you serious?

About half way down the page under drive system. Very serious. You are soon to be an affirmed addict. About Monday.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi

Just don't skimp on memory card quality. As you can see here there is a wide range of write performance:

See ya tomorrow. Way past my bedtime. Followed Ike as long as I can for tonight.

Using an SD card is going to have be sufficient for now, the camera and a second battery has set me back a little.

I suggest getting a tripod. No amount of image stabilization will prevent camera shake at very low speeds. I got mine for just $30 and I can tilt the camera sideways to take portrait shots with it, in case you want to take panos in portrait and stitch it.

bibit is very right about the tripod. That camera with proper settings and a quality subject is capable of capturing a 24x60 mural to hang over the sofa if used in portrait mode and stitched. Certain conditions must be met in order to get the capture as in no (at least very calm) wind or fixed objects but it is very doable. I'll be in the field teaching this very thing tomorrow PM. At your earliest possible time to go with the tripod a remote release is a must have also. You can use the self timer but it makes the task more difficult as you need to work very quickly a lot of times in making images to be stitched because of changing light conditions. You can shoot all five images in half time it takes for one with the self timer. A back up chip is also advised if your are going on the road. Murphy dictates that rule. With only one chip it will fail or you'll see so much you'll fill it before you have captured all there is you want to. Happy Saturday all. Go shoot something. I am.

Right now I have two 1-gig chips, and one 2-gig. I picked them up when they were on sale. I think that should tie me over for now, right?

Oh Nomadicus, you know Murphy too? He taught me about carrying a package of batteries at all times.

Perhaps a crash-course in the remote release, when anyone gets the chance.

It's a simple cable that has a button on to mash and the shutter fires without putting pressure on the camera. Even on a tripod unless it's one with the center weights in place mashing the shutter can create camera shake. Don't depend on IS to be a cure all because it's not. Now when you get a good over cast day where you can close that f stop down to f22 if you use a cable on those beautiful falls you can get a steamy effect. With a shutter speed of 1-2 seconds it's a totally different photo. Try it.

Nomadicus what advantages does a $750 tripod have over a $30 tripod?

Depends on weight, the weight it will support, smoothness of operation, whether or not it has a geared head and or column, how much precision machining is involved. A biggie is how far are you going to pack one on your back. Those nice really sturdy but ultra light carbon fiber are certainly at an advantage if you are doing a 12 mile hike into the outback or better yet up a long mountain upgrade...A 30 dollar tripod will get anyone started just fine especially with a cable release. Inexpensive tripods will often move when you press a shutter button. That's a big difference when you need a tack sharp image and can't use the timer and need a slower shutter speed. Best thing to do is go to a real camera and photo supply and compare. Nothing better than a hands on to see the difference.
