Default Light trails and shutter speeds

A few months ago one of those traveling carnivals came to town. When I saw the rides being assembled, my first thought was to visit at night and photograph some moving rides to get light trails.

I thought it might be helpful to see the effect different shutter speeds have on the moving lights, as well as the ambient light. Each of these photos was shot using shutter priority (Tv). The only thing I changed was the shutter speed. The ride was operating at full speed the entire time, so the speed of the ride didn't change at all - just the speed of my camera's shutter. The camera also adjusted the aperture each time I adjusted the shutter speed.

Nice Claire! In one of the books I was reading, that was an example too! Lucky you for being in the right place at the right time!

I like the 8 second shot. H'm steady shoulder or tripod? The 1/2 second reminds me of an oil well pump.

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad you like it. This was something I had wanted to do for a long time. I just had to wait for the carnival to arrive.

Most definitely a tripod! I'm the shakiest shooter in the west.
