Fujifilm S1000fd for quick/dirty point & shoot - great (relatively) inexpensive little camera; lol, never leave home w/o it
Come early '09, will be acquiring dream camera,,, to be decided [based on financials], but leaning towards a Canon version... or a Nikon... or a ...
Common perception [for what its worth] is that the Canon is more sports/outdoors orientated, while the Nikon is portrait, indoor, etc. As my main focus [pun? what pun? ] is outdoors, landscape, sunrises/sets, critters, macro, etc., have leaned towards Canon [based on talks w/ camera users that have talked w/ in person here and there over the past couple years], but that D90 looks terrible sweet.
After toting around an ancient Olympus om101, I decided to purchase a Canon XSi. Best camera I have ever had. You could take a picture blindfolded and still have professional results...
..My Nikon D40 is nice as well, I don't like the interface though. It also takes great pictures with little effort.
If any consolation, I was told by a photographer friend that a recent Buffalo Jills (cheerleaders to the Buffalo Bills) calendar was shot entirely with a Canon XSi, the secondary camera. It must have been the great Florida beach background that helped.
1. They have much better macro lenses than other names (MPE-65, EF 100 and EF180).
2. The Canon camera I bought was incorrectly labled at a Comp USA that was going out of business so I bought the last one.
Since I really do only macro, Canon was the only choice because nothing compares to their MPE lens as far as macro is concerned. Its by far the best on the market.
At the moment I'm using a Fuji S100, but love shooting macro. I googled the Canon MPE lens, and I am impressed....I think I may just buy myself some new toys for Christmas...
I use a Canon 40D when I'm going to go out and knowingly do stock shots for the day. If I'm going somewhere when I don't want to carry pounds of camera around my neck but still want decent quality "just in case a money shot shows up", then I carry a Nikon D40 for it's size/weight most of the time.
I'm no professional, but up until a month and a half ago I used a Canon A640 and a Fujifilms E900 which I still carry around in my pocket at all times. Now I have a Canon 40D which I love!
Like bitbit, I too have the Panny FZ50 and am very happy with it. Used to use Nikon N2000 SLR during film days.
Am thinking of replacing FZ but the size of the DSLRs is scary (I do not need sub 200 ISO). The only one I may consider is Oly E30 (just released) - unless Panny comes up with a new FZ with less noise up to ISO 400 in which case I may never buy a DSLR. I travel a lot and small size + zoom + articulating LCD + in camera stabilization are important to me.
