so i called my bank to add my camera to my insurance policy. they told me that since i use it for business 70% of the year, that i need some kind of business and liability insurance for $700! ridiculous. i don't know if the $5000 i make in a year from my camera is worth the $700 a year that i would have to pay!

The liability insurance needs depend somewhat upon what type of photography you're doing. If you're having clients visit your home, it's probably wise, as your homeowner's liability insurance won't cover business clients. If they slip on your front step or trip over a cord and break their neck....

I go through State Farm for my camera/business insurance. I have roughly $20,000 on off-premises camera gear and more on equipment (computers, etc.) that's not taken from home. It costs me about $500/year.

I use State Farm too, and find it to be one of the most reasonably priced ones out there. Plus, if I add equipment, its next to no hassle to call and add it....

Look at it this way: if the place burns tomorrow, do you have the bucks to replace everything? Or, if a client does a slip/trip/fall, will you be able to cover the medical costs? If your equipment is damaged by a client, and they can't pay for it, if your car is stolen with your gear in it, or if someone breaks in and steals your gear, can you replace it out of pocket?

If the answers to any of those is 'no' you need coverage. No ifs, ands or buts, you need it. From the smallest lens to the vehicle you use to conduct business, you need business liability coverage.
