I think that probably related more to the weather conditions in the arctic where they summer...They all wake up one morning and find ice on the ponds and lakes and head for warmer places....Sometimes I think they are smarter than I we are..
You're probably right. I just know that gulls tend to migrate differently. The farther south you are the later they arrive.

Digging up an old thread for some assistance, please.
A pair of 'mystery' ducks showed up at our pond several days ago and I was viewing all of your photos looking for them but to no avail. Can anyone identify these ducks? My searching has come up with nada, zilch, nothing. The Muscovy comes close but our ducks are lacking the bump on the top of the bill and the patterns of white feathers doesn't quite match with the Muscovy. Thanks for your help and also for the wonderful duck photos.

Upon further checking, I've come to the conclusion our mystery ducks are Muscovy. My photo doesn't do them justice. When the sun hits their feathers, they aren't black but a vibrant green:
