Can we put just boats in this thread, or do I need to search for the boat thread?

Never mind. I found it -- Trains, Boats and Planes. Don't ask me what page it's on, though.

I think it would depend on your definition of "boat" vs "ship". In this area they are all called boats because the Great Lakes are fresh water. In a marine environment they are ships. I still have a hard time calling something 1013.5' long that floats and carries 71,250 tons of material a "boat."

Image from "boatnerd.com" of the "Paul R. Tregurtha" largest "boat" on the Great Lakes.

That's very interesting how they determine whether it's a boat or a ship, i.e. fresh water or salt water. I was thinking more in the line of a tour boat or regular speed boat, though, and I'll go to the other thread or the "On the Lake" thread for those photos.

It's so cool how you always can learn new things here, even if it's not really about photography!

But all "ships" regardless of ownership are called "boats" on the Great Lakes.
