Hello eveyone, new to this section of the boards. I want to take pictures inside of the stores I go to, just random, fun stuff to send to friends. Has anyone done this? How discreet does one need to be? Thanks!!!

Don't get caught without permission. Industrial espionage is a crime. Sounds innocent and maybe but you can get into a heap of trouble.

Getting arrested for industrial espionage is probably a worst case. Depending on the store, you may be detained and asked for identification. Or perhaps a small shop will simply ask you to stop. In any case, your efforts are going to make people uncomfortable and angry. With that in mind, use your best judgement.

Well, maybe. But when you take a picture of an item, is ok, I think. At least I did it in several countries and all the time here in the US. Never was asked a question, or stopped, or arrested, or escorted out. All my pictures I did take in plain view.
I think all depends what are you photographing and what your intentions are. Asking for permission and little explanation always help to get an o.k.
Here some of my pictures.

The few times I've tried it, I was asked to stop or, when I requested permission first, found it was not granted -- especially inside shopping malls. I have taken photos in some grocery stores and produce markets, but these were in other countries.

I have occasionally but very surreptitiously.

Also managed to take a short video in Poland earlier this year

That fact that you did it in a few grocery stores and got away with it is irrelevant. Most stores do not allow photography in the USA. That especially includes shopping malls and big department stores. Many small shops won't allow it either. That's a fact, and if you don't believe me, trying asking a shop owner for permission. Most won't allow it.

I do it often and rarely have had issues. I try to be discreet, take 1-2 pics put camera away, repeat. I'm also a big dude, maybe nobody wants to mess with me. I took several hundred pictures (of various fabrics/yarns) in a row at a Wal-Mart at like 2am, nobody seemed to care (though technically it's against their policy.

How do you explain all of the pictures taken of wal mart customers...if it's that hard to do? I'm just wondering... I've seen some of the great pictures that you people here take.. I wish I had your talent...
