Here is the Orion Constellation peering through the clouds:

Note Betealguese and the Great Orion Nebulae

These other two pics show more clouds:

I know it is amateur, but it is the first night shooting on manuel with my new Nikon d3000.

No apology needed .....good stuff...keep at it

I played at similar stuff yrs ago..great fun

I eventually built a 6 inch reflector and mounted camera at eye tube...then with a clock drive you can make really long exposures etc...great hobby

Here's a great shot everybody has a go at...point at north ...center screen...long exposure etc...at least an hour....you'll see north star in center of course but the other stars will appear as streaks( arcs) as the night sky revolves around the north star

if you've got kids get them involved...great quality time...they get to stay up late (hot chocolate yum) and learn something at the same time... it's a win win

even sunrise and sunsets...

Thanks, I'll try that. What I rfeally want to do is get a picture of the Milky Way with homes below them. right now we have a moon that is almost full and it ruins the sky.

Here are some more night landscapes on C-D: http://www.city-data.com/forum/photo...andscapes.html

You can get great wide-angle shots with just a camera on a tripod. These are all pics I took with just the camera on a tripod without telescope:
Orion (without annotations)
Milky Way
Andromeda Galaxy
Andromeda wide-field
Star trails
Nightscape

Look into stacking for night sky shots.
