What is your favorite free photo editing software? I used to use Adobe's free photo starter edition but I have a new computer and it appears it is no longer available. I just want the basics, like cropping, adjusting sharpness and color, turning to black and white, etc.

Google's Picasa is fine for the editing basics plus it gives you some free storage for sharing.
For basic image manipulation, (cropping, resizing, batch processing etc) which is what most people really need Irfanview is great little program. There's good chance most pros will have this in their toolbox.
I would recommend looking at some of the almost free products. The most popular is Photoshop Elements. The latest version is very full featured. I know some photographers on a tight budget who sell their work and use this. And new it costs next to nothing. It is on sale right now thru the end of the month: ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 8. It even comes free with some cameras. I got it free before but I opt for using the full version of PS. So used on ebay or craigslist would be really cheap.
I wish some one would make a free for Netbook users.. I've had all that have been mentioned above and it seems to over whelm the screen..It's workable but that poor little screen...
There is usually free software that does all the basic which comes with your camera. You can probably download it off the company's website too.
If you're not happy with that, I suggest Picasa. GIMP is a highly recommended free software but as I understand it, it does a lot more than just the basics so it may be unnecessary for you.

You really couldn't get a much more stripped down interface than Irfanview.
You can remove/add different views usually under the "View" setting options on most programs.
