Hi Guys,
Me and my wife are planning to move to Pittsburgh. We are in our early 30s and are professionals. I travel every week Mon-Thurs for my work and my wife would be working in downtown.

We tried to rent at the usual places - Shadyside, Fox chapel, Squirrel hill. Apartments are either not available or are expensive, or not as "good" as we are hoping for.

I am planning to spend upto $1500 for a 2br.

Since I'll be out for most of the week, we are looking for a neighborhood which has good walkability and is safe. We dont have kids yet so school district is not important to us, but dont mind staying in family-oriented neighborhoods.

We have to move in April. I have been looking at short-term leases in Franklin Park (Taylor ridge apartments), and know that it doesn't fit the walkability criteria, so its not on the top of my list, which is pretty small right now.

I was hoping you guys can help us out in suggesting neighbourhoods/apartment complexes which fit the bill. I have tried looking at Fox Chapel, shadyside, squirrel hill and did not find many apartments available.

If you looked in Dormont and Mt. Lebanon, your wife would be able to take light rail downtown. Regent Square, Bloomfield, Friendship are also popular neighborhoods.

Hey fleetibelle - thanks for the suggestions.
How would you rate them in terms of walkability and commute to downtown?

Try Mt Washington, Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, Downtown, North Shore/Central Northside, Point Breeze, Highland Park, Friendship.

And one more thing, our personal preference is to move to a predominantly non-diverse area.

Your budget doesn't put too many constraints on where you can look, and neither does the criteria that you've given so far. You simply want walkable and safe, there are a lot of places that could meet that definition.

What sorts of things do you want to be able to walk to?

Do you need off street parking?

How will your wife commute to downtown? Do you travel by car or through the airport?

Would you mind living in downtown itself? That would be my first option in your situation.

That's not a hard thing to find in Allegheny County honestly. But all of the lower costs neighborhoods mentioned are good places to live.
