How would you advise someone who is coming from Washington, PA to get downtown, without having to drive the entire route? Are there any good "park and ride" locations along the I79 / Parkway West corridors? Thanks

There are several private bus companies that have routes that go from washington, canonsburg, south point, etc. to downtown. Here is one.

Washington City Transit (http://www.ggcbusride.com/washington_city_transit.htm - broken link)

I believe there's a park-and-ride at Carnegie. It lies right on the end of the West Busway. There have been some complications with new scheduling of the buses, but you can use the G1 and G2 buses to get to Downtown and Oakland respectively.

If you're on the north side of Washington, you could drive as far as Rt. 19 and Ft. Couch Road to the T station at South Hills Village. There's a big park and ride garage there with a nominal daily fee.

Geeo's idea sounds almost more appealing to me because it would entail less driving (albeit on U.S. 19 rather than I-79). It would cost more in fares and parking to take the T from South Hills Village, but that doesn't necessarily mean that that trip "costs" more because the I-79 route might be more stressful with traffic, more wear and tear on the car, etc. etc. I think it really depends on what your personal preferences are when it comes to travel, but I try to make it a point to people that driving incurs costs that most people don't even think about.

Like I said, I would investigate the South Hills Village park-and-ride for the T, the Carnegie park-and-ride for the West Busway, and any park-and-rides that might exist for Washington County transit (which would be outside of my knowledge as I really am only familiar with Allegheny County's (Port Authority).
