Does anyone know if boys can play HS field hockey in schools competing under the WPIAL in the Pittsburgh area?

It is state law that any sport that does not have an alternate-sex equivalent must allow everyone to play. Boys can play field hockey and girls can play football.

The school might put up a fight, but that is what state law says...

The law might say that, but in reality, I don't see any such thing as boys being on any of the WPIAL member's Field Hockey teams. Similarly, there's no boys Softball and there's no girls Football.

An all-male team with some training would probably crush most other teams.

When I was in high school at Woodland Hills (1999-2001) there was a handful of boys on the field hockey team. I know even up to maybe about 2005 there were some boys on the team, I am not sure if there were any more recently, though.

That being said, Woodland Hills had (has?) a "no cut" policy where you didn't have to try out for any team. I'm not sure what it would be like at any other school district. Perhaps the boys would not make the team. I don't know.

Thanks. I am moving to the area and I supposed try outs would be soon. I'll be going to North Allegheny and just wondered if WPIAL had taken a position or whether it would be a school decision. I'm no martyr so if it will be a big fight I'd probably not bother, but would like to play if I can.

So how does that sit with the fact that there is no such thing as Boy's Softball or no such thing as Girl's Football in the WPIAL??

Then the boys will have to play on the girls' team and the girls on the guys' team if they want to play.

I just Facebooked an NA FH coach who said:

"He can def play! I was actually hoping for a guy to be a goalie for us! Do you know anyone?"

Doesn't sound like a big fight to me! Especially if you can play goalie.

Post here or PM me details (age, grade, experience), and I'll see what she says.
