Try Penn Ave Fish Co sometime too. I dunno anything about their sushi prep, but it'll certainly start out with the best fish. That alone won't cover for a mediocre sushi chef, though, it seems like.

Sushi hanging around packaged in those stores is just, well, it is what it is. I've even eaten that a few times. It's not particularly worth eating, but every once in a while I forget.

Icky. I don't eat sushi with raw fish in it. Worst sushi.

Isn't that what sushi is?

What?

You realize that the mint leaf is just a garnish right? To make it look nice. You can ask to have it left off... what a silly piece of criticism.

It was no mere garnish. I had to pick it out of each piece of maki (roll). I wasn't really paying that much attention to what he was doing as he put it together, and what would possess me to tell the chef to leave things out? I've never had to do that before.

Maybe it was the roll you ordered, I got the Mango Salmon yesterday and it only had a little bit on top as a garnish.

I don't like onions and will ask chefs to leave them out of the dish sometimes, it's not an uncommon practice for someone to not like something and then ask to have it left out.

I've never encountered onion on sushi, other than scallion. I usually order something that doesn't have scallion, though I'm not sure I've ever asked specifically to have sushi made without it.

Neither have I, it was just a general example.

I've never heard of onion or mint being a sushi ingredient nor as a result would it ever enter my mind to mention 'please leave out the onions & mint'

I recently ate at Umi, and they have at least one roll with onion (which is enough for me to say no to it) and two rolls that have mint, one vegetarian and one with yellowtail. I'm normally something of a sushi purist (at least from an American point of view), but I tried the mint & yellowtail and liked it well enough. The mint wasn't so strong as to be overpowering, thank goodness, so overall it worked out well.

I've only been to three Pittsburgh sushi places so far, and this is how I would rate them:

Umi
Chaya
Plum
