Little tangent here. Rode in to work on one of the new EBA busses. Nice and shiny. Extremely smooth & quiet ride too.

The consultants they hired for the TDP (proposing the overall Rapid Bus plan discussed above) were well-recognized experts, and so are the consultants they just hired to do the Oakland study:

Bus rapid transit proposal receives $1 million commitment - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Quote:
The PB Americas Inc. study will evaluate all BRT options. It will examine where bus-only lanes could be built, traffic signals could be set to give BRT buses priority or buses might need to share the road with regular traffic. It will measure how each option might affect development, travel times and transit ridership. And it will see where BRT could displace residents, eliminate parking spaces or harm the environment or any historic structures. . . . The company has performed similar studies for 35 other BRT projects in the United States and 60 others worldwide.
Generally I don't think the current PAT management under Bland's leadership gets enough credit for its professionalism. I'm not saying everything they have done is necessarily perfect, but I think it is unfair to lump them in with all past PAT managers.

The third door is also very useful.

On the other hand, twice now we have pulled into the East Liberty garage to switch to an old bus, which is a very cruel bait-and-switch.

By the way, our little one just started kindergarten, and we tried to use the 61s from Downtown as part of our pickup routine. Boy was that a mistake--total nightmare at that time of day. So we are actually going to use our regular express bus to get back to our house, then drive to the school, which should be much more reliable.

That was a handy reminder to me that we really do need these BRT routes to succeed. During much of the day the East End service along these routes is fine, but at peak times it becomes horrible--which of course is precisely when people need them the most.
