I am doing most of our househunting via Google Street View, so pardon what would otherwise be an easy question to solve on my own:

Is there any way for a pedestrian to get between east and west Edgewood except for the perilous-looking tunnel at Race and Pennwood?

There's a pedestrian tunnel about half a block up Pennwood between Race and W. Swissvale. When I was a kid we'd walk through there or cross the train tracks... although I don't really think the tracks are conducive to crossing now with the bus way.

pennwood ave, 15218 - Google Maps

Just FYI, that tunnel at Race isn't a problem for pedestrians (we've used it a lot).

Edit: I just looked it up on Google Streetview, and it is definitely much less scary in person. The cars on Race are typically not moving very fast, and there is more space on the sidewalks than Google makes it seem.

I've been in that tunnel -- well, tried at least. We wanted to walk from an open house to the library, but the sidewalk in the tunnel could not handle a double stroller. Also, if you are at all tall, you kinda have to lean!

Is that really how kids on the Regent Square side walk home from Edgewood Elementary?

Sure, why not? They aren't in strollers and are too short to lean (although I am about 6 feet, and I have never had to lean).

I don't know if kids from Regent Square walk to school (pretty far for K-3 -- well, those were the grades when I went to school there), but they would likely go through the pedestrian tunnel that I mentioned before.

There are crossing guards on both sides of the pedestrian tunnel and, I think, at both sides of the vehicle underpass (Race/Pennwood and Race/E. Swissvale), but it would be out of the way to walk over there if you were walking from the school towards Regent Square.

Interestingly, the crossing guard who works that corner has been helping children cross safely for 40 years.

Edgewood crossing guard, 80, still going strong
