In doing some research I've found some neighborhoods with several very inexpensive houses in need of rehab.I'd like some input on these neighborhoods.I have a 12 year old daughter so I don't want city schools

Coraopolis, McKees Rocks, Millvale, Carnegie, Carrick and Brighton Heights. Thanks

Carrick and Brighton Heights will be in the horrible city schools. Coraopolis, McKees Rocks, Millvale and Carnegie will not be. But, their school districts are nothing to write home about either.

Millvale is part of the Shaler SD, and still a pretty decent area. Coraopolis would be second on my list. After that, don't bother.

Go for Millvale.

Coraopolis: old river town, low crime, not bad. Don't know anything about the school district.

McKees Rocks/ Stowe: struggling town, mostly impoverished although some nice areas, and I have heard bad things about the school district. That said, I live here, and it's okay.

Millvale: This is your best option.

Carnegie and Brighton Heights are decent areas but I don't know about the school district. I have heard bad things about Carrick.

From posts I've read here Shaler is a pretty good school district and the lower part of Carnegie (Glendale) is in Chartiers Valley which is also supposed to be good. True?

once upon a time carrick was nice but not so much anymore
muggings, burglary, crack heads, assults, welfare, hookers at the foodland, and a few old timers that have been there forever, but are dying off or moving

Millvale is the brightest spot of that lot IMO, just because of its much closer proximity to the city vs Carnegie. Both school systems are probably about average, which is better than some others. The problem with Millvale and to a lesser extent Carnegie as well is flooding. So you want to pay close attention to that with respect to location of the house.

Millvale has a lot going for it. It has a riverfront park with a pavillion, boat ramp, and a biking/jogging path that goes along the allegheny down to the north shore or across to Washington's Landing.

It has Mr Smalls concert venue, a highly acclaimed french bakery, and a few other decent shops (candy store, record store, pamela's diner). The kids go to Shaler school district which is a step up from what you are normally going to get in a neighborhood that cheap.

That said, the housing stock isn't in great condition and you get a lot of "real" (borderline trashy) people there, though it doesn't seem unsafe.

From what I understand, Millvale has pretty much been "the same" for quite some time, but it does seem poised to take off with Lawrenceville across the bridge taking off and the recent announcement of federal grant to clean up the Allegheny riverfront.

Isn't Carnegie in the Carlynton School District? Not bad but not great. Millvale is in Shaler. Shaler isn't bad. I agree that Millvale has been the same for some time. I just don't see many people flocking to Millvale. My experience with Millvale is that it is still rough around the edges.

Whats wrong with Carlynton? Not every district can be a Mt. Lebanon or USC. It is a solid, safe, above average district.
