My problems with the cops aren't with the City cops. I usually find them to be the most helpful and genuinely concerned (though not particularly good at giving directions to the lost)
However, it is the smaller forces that I've had problems with - the Port Authority, the Housing Authority, etc. My experience has been that those are the guys that tend to be on a power trip.
I kind of think that it is probably some sort of Napoleon (or Little Man) complex. Folks think of those forces as lesser (smaller, limited jurisdiction, etc.) than the City cops and then some of the officers respond with over-compensation.
Actually, I felt like I saw the same thing when I lived in rural PA. The state troopers were OK, some down right cool, but the small town cops tended to have a chip on their shoulder.
(There are exceptions to this in every case - the state trooper who is accused of killing Dr. John Yelenic never was nor will be OK or cool.)

Yes its the few bad apples that make the rest look bad...that is true...I have seen the following in a few small towns, certain officers taking the fall for things, getting a light sentence and then rewarded for that after being sprung from prison...and some taking bribes from some powerful dark groups, i shall call it here, doing their bidding, well known in the small town and no one talking bout it, prolly out of fear of retailiation too.

Hey Elder
Take your wife to the game and park close to the "tail-gaters. This way you only have to be concerned about the "drink tax".

rural lady,
Troy Hill is definetly a safe city neighborhood, one of the few left that people can still walk their dogs in the evening and sit on their porches without fear of gunshots or drug dealers on the corners...
It's a lower class neighborhood, very affordable housing stock, locals become very friendly after they warm up to you...I personally own quite a few rental properties up on the hill and from first hand experience I can tell you, it's a descent little area...

I used to live in the Brighton Heights area (before it got as bad as it is now), so I can tell you that the previous posts are pretty accurate. As long as you stay close to the stadiums and West Park, you'll be fine.
The bad news is that things get worse the further north you go. Most anywhere beyond the Mexican War Streets, and you're pretty much on your own. Avoid Charles St, Perrysville Ave., California Avenue to Marshall, and the northern end of Manchester.

I am sitting here reading all this about the northside and I am surprised to say the least I was brought up near Beaver Ave and hung there until I went into the Navy and yeah we had our fights amoung each other but never was there a murder that i can remember in that area. I was born in that area in 1937 and left in 1956 and i still have some great memorys of the Northside. I live in New England now (Rhode Island ) and I love it here.
