Guys I have question - I have a co-worker looking to get out of NYC and of course you know I recommended Pittsburgh....Like anyone else she had a very outdated view of the Burgh (think street lights on at Noon)....

Anyway she's coming out for visit soon for a weekend....She's moving because she's burned out on NYC as we all are and wants a lower COL and slower more laid back pace of life but keep all the big city amenities (no place better than the burgh for that)....

She and her husband are in Finance and her husband can actually keep his job in NYC and telecommute to the office, needing to make the trip every so often for BIG BIG meetings for which the company would pay for the flights to and from (God I need to apply at his office..LOL)...

She will need to find a new job however but can live off the hubby for a while, but wants her own source of income....with being in Finance I dont think she'll have hard time finding work in the Burgh, I pointed her to some of the Big Money Management companies in the Burgh already...

Now to the Question - She wants Suburb in the city feel neighborhood she want all the conveniences of the city but the feeling of the burbs when at home...I told her to look at:

Summerset
Aspinwall
Mt Lebanon

Would be my 3 best choices for providing this. I know Mt Leb and Aspinwall are not city proper, but lets face in they would be city neighborhoods almost anywhere else....All are very city-like convenient, and they all provide that suburb-like quietness and neighborliness.

Would you add any others to the list?

I think those are wonderful options as far as convincing her to update her perspective on Pittsburgh. Touring them will really open her eyes.

I dunno, I would think even (at least some parts of) Shadyside and Squirrel Hill could feel like suburbs to someone from NYC, although may depend upon where in NYC they currently live. Parts of Mt Washington feel rather suburb-y I think. Highland Park, maybe? It all really depends upon what constitutes suburb "feeling". Summerset being a new development of course really does that if that is what you're looking for. I'm not sure it really fits as far as convenience, though. It depends upon how large an emphasis would be put on not driving, I guess.

Convenience to downtown is probably a factor here (would think her job in finance would likely be downtown) which would play into something like Mt Lebo with the T ride and less into something like Aspinwall.

Yeah, it also depends on whether you see this as a serious neighborhood-hunting trip, or more of just a chance to wow her. For example, although Aspinwall would be an absolutely lovely place to live, you have to pass through that really nasty part of Sharpsburg (unless you come from the north or west!). I might skip Aspinwall this trip -- or take some crazy back route to get there -- if the goal is more just to convince her that the area is nice.

Nice suggestions, but those neighborhood don't offer amenities the other neighborhoods do...granted Summerset depends on Squirrel Hill/Greenfield and the Waterfront for amenities but its alot closer virtually next door...Summerset maybe out because if she gets a job with good PAT service i.e Downtown then she'll want to have PAT access.

Aspinwall has its own Business District and Waterworks

Mt Leb has everything one would need.
