The South Hills portion of the T is definitely underdeveloped. So, for that matter, are many parts of the Busways. So I think there is a real opportunity here for Pittsburgh to significantly increase opportunities for those who would like a transit-oriented location--but as usual, the pace will be determined in part by the availability of funds.

Thanks so much for bringing my attention to this article. I just shared the link on my Facebook wall along with some "preachiness" touting the benefits of TOD.

While I currently detest living in Fairfax County, VA I do have to admit our neighboring jurisdiction of Arlington County, VA is an exemplary role model that Pittsburgh should follow for how to do TOD. The Orange Line of the Metrorail system has created a dense and vibrant corridor in the neighborhoods of Ballston, Virgnia Square, Clarendon, Court House, and Rosslyn, where transit ridership is so profound that even though Arlington has 220,000 residents it seems to have less gridlock on its surface streets than my current autocentric suburb of just 65,000. So many people want to live car-free or nearly as car-free as possible that most 1-BR rental prices in this Orange Line TOD corridor are in the $1,500+ range per month, amongst the highest in Northern Virginia.

I just found out the place I'm looking into in Polish Hill is within walking distance to a stop on the Busway, so I'm stoked, to say the least, to learn that my car will be a luxury item instead of an essential, as it is here.

We should definitely be trying to emulate the "urban villages" along the Orange Line. We've actually got some of that happening already--some of the neighborhoods along the T and Busways are former streetcar suburbs, the original form of TOD. But we could do more (in some cases by revitalizing other former streetcar suburbs).

Congrats , what does the site look like now and what will it look like? On a side note. Every NJT station will have some sort of TOD near it by 2030 , 4 stations on my line have TOD UC or completed. They range form a few apartments and stores , to a huge Dense Development of stores and housing...... Some cities in my state have really taken off with TOD like Rahway , Harrison South Amboy , Perth Amboy , Long Branch and New Brunswick. I think you should look at Harrison which is similar to Pittsburgh in terms of its past , but there doing alot to get rid of the old factories and reinvent the city.
