Actually, he reminds me a lot of Al Groh...Virginia just gave him the boot at the end of last year I believe after some initial success.

Wannstedt is out but will remain in the Athletics department. Not happy to see it happen but he really wasn't very good as a coach. Funny how coaches come and go at Pitt while JoePa just lingers on and on... Paterno has been at Penn State since 1950 and became head coach in 1966.

Not sure if Pitt should go with another fired but experienced ex-coach or try an up-and-coming young one.

Well...an interesting idea would be Mike Leach of Texas Tech fame. The guy knows how to run an offense and compete, his system is just about flawless as long as he gets the right type of recruits and a decent defensive coordinator.

You don't want Leach. Being fired for being abusive to a player should be a red flag. His teammates backed the player, and not the coach.

Hiring coaches who failed elsewhere is usually not a good strategy, although there are exceptions - Jim Caldwell failed at Wake Forest. Hard to recruit to Wake.

TCU will be in the conference soon. They'll be the instant favorites, barring major changes.

I like hiring an assistant who's been very successful, or a successful coach of a smaller program.

Agreed - Pederson wants a character guy, so I can't see Leach in the running.

Al Golden is off the board.
Dana Holgersen is off the board.
Teryl Austin is off the board.
Tom Bradley is likely not on the board.
Not sure if these guys were ever on the board to begin with, but does anyone else not have a good feeling about this?

They can't/won't spend the money on a coach, so it seems that the program is mired in mediocrity.

Ok, they hired Michael Haywood of Miami of Ohio. The guy went 9-4 in the MAC. What makes Pitt think he's better than Wannstedt?

Yeah, it's depressing. And we'll probably have to suffer for 5 years to "give the guy a chance" till they have to get the next coach. Is this the best Pitt can do?
