Smile Hill District Carnegie Library

The address is 419 Dinwiddie St
Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

I'm a big fan of libraries and I'd like to visit all of the ones in the Carnegie system in Pittsburgh, but I'm a bit skeeved out about going into the Hill District.

I know it's not open yet, and it's supposed to be state-of-the-art or something.

Any advice?

By the way, I'm not as paranoid as I may seem. Just curious. But, I guess, isn't paranoid extreme curiosity?

My advice is this: don't be a weenie, and go there. I mean, if you were going there to check out some new nightclub in the neighborhood or something of that sort, I'd ask you if you were nucking futs. But do you suppose gangstas lookin' to start sh*t are gonna be at the library boning up on differential equations or diving into a Jane Austen novel while they wait on an enticing target to cross their path? Like Chris Rock says, books are like kryptonite to that particular class of folk, only he describes them using a word that I'm not allowed to use...

Is the Hill Library a Carnegie Library? I thought those were all older, built when ole Andy was alive.

I wasn't so curious about conditions inside the library itself, but more so on the way in and out of the area.

I think it's interesting that they are putting the library there, but I guess there really isn't another one nearby.

You'll be fine! It's a breeze! No worry at all! Safest place in the U.S.!

Sike! Just jokin

But seriously, you should be ok in the day time. For safety there is a police station at the top of the street. Night time......, can be scary from centre to fith ave. (dinwiddle)

Well, I never felt uncomfortable enough in the Hill during a quick drive-through during the daytime to not do it again. I wouldn't linger in the area for long though -- keep moving. Thankfully, not a lot of stoplights in the Hill to keep you sitting and idling and waiting for a green.

According to Wiki, the last Carnegie library was built in 1930, so there is apparently no ongoing endowment.

The public library system in Pittsburgh is called "Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh" and this is one of their branches. So it's a Carnegie library (branch of CLP) but not a Carnegie-built library.

Also: If I'm not mistaken, this is the renovation of an existing branch, not a new location for them. See: About Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Hill District.

Thank you. The link looks interesting. There is a Carnegie Library in Boulder, CO and even one in Leadville at 10000 feet in the Rockies!
