So, this year at least, Homewood is twice as dangerous as the Strip. You'd think it was a lot more than that from the way people around here talk.

Nice to see that Perry North aka Observatory Hill aka my neighborhood has the same murder rate as Shadyside.

I'm not pointing fingers, but I can almost guarantee that most of the people that come here and carp about crime stats live in the suburbs.

That list was published on another site by a fellow Pittsburgher. I don't know the difference between Perry North or South nor where some of those places even are as I live in the suburbs, lol. My list would have the same numbers except I'd generalize and lump places like the North Side and Hill area together rather than being specific. I thought you'd find it interesting and definitive.

The Pgh. Courier gives details about every murder in the county every month in print and on their site. Not usually included in the homicide count is when there's a murder by cop like what happened earlier this year in the Strip. As of a few days ago the county has had 69 murders this year and the city 42 as of today. Last year's city total was 57 so we're not looking too good. I think the county had 94 murders last year.

The problem that can arise with lumping large parts of the city together is that in certain cases it makes it tougher to draw comparisons between different parts of the city.

Taking that approach, the Hill would consist of 5 neighborhoods, (Upper Hill, Middle Hill, Terrace Village, Bedford Dwellings, and Crawford-Roberts) with a combined population of about 14,100 (2000 census). Considering that Shadyside has a population of 13,000 and Mt. Washington 9,800, I suppose it's comparable in that case. On the other hand, some city neighborhoods have a population in the hundreds (Strip District was 266)

Likewise, if the North Side was lumped together, it's 18 neighborhoods would combine for a population of 48,300 (2000 census). At that scale and size, its much more comparable to other cities (Harrisburg, Reading, Altoona, Lancaster) rather than city neighborhoods like Point Breeze, Allentown, or Regent Square.

Rep!

Thanks for putting beautifully what I've been saying as long as I've been posting here. Factor in that it's usually gang members in a couple of North Side neighborhoods shooting each other and I continue to feel safe here and am not rethinking my home purchase. Here's to 30 more years of being a North Sider!

well it used to be you would walk down any street any where with out worry hell even leve your doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition now that are certian sections of Ambridge amd Aliquippa to avoid as well as the "rox" area but I never seem to have any troubles anywhere I go. Yes I have heard all the horror stories about meckees rocks, plans 11 & 12 in Aliquippia, Economy and crestview terraces and locust street and 1st street in Ambridge.

Remember, crime rates don't tell the whole story. A neighborhood like the Strip District, with a low resident population, but a high daily influx of non-residents (workers, club and bar patrons, etc.) will have MORE crime, as the population of full time residents is vastly outnumbered by the temporary population. Drawing meaningful conclusions about whether to live there or not based on one statistic is probably not wise.

Yes, I live in that home of cheerleading, Observatory Hill, and have been proudly doing so for 20 years. Just my two cents worth.
