I had lived in Shadyside and there was too much going on all the time. Sirens day and night, cops busting down doors for drug busts, etc. I wanted to live near there, but in a place that was nice and quiet and wasn't on the news all the time. So I moved to Wilkinsburg. When I lived there in 1970 & '71 it was fine. I worked there in real estate from '76 to '81.

Times were getting bad economically. Crimes were on the rise. First it was stealing copper pipes and stained glass windows out of vacant houses., later progressing to store holdups, bank robberies, and murder. I quit my job before it got real bad. It's a shame what's happened to that town. Homewood wasn't really bad before that era either.

No kidding. South Park? As in the sleepy little suburb 10 miles south of the city? I lived in South Park. I saw a car hit a deer there once, and the deer got up and ran away. Even the deer are tough in South Park! And a wild turkey almost hit my windshield! Rough place...

I'm gonna bring my gat next time I drive through Mt Lebanon just to be safe!

The longer I'm here, the more I realize how sheltered Pittsburghers are.

I live in East Pittsburgh. While there is really nothing to see here and no good reason to hang about if you don't live here, there is absolutely no reason to avoid the place.

Lol, indeed!
Having lived in a "bad" neighborhhood in Pittsburgh for the last 23 years and loving every moment of it, for you kids who are looking out for "rough" places and places to avoid, I'd recommend steering clear of:
South Side
North Side
East End
West End

That way you can always feel safe!
