We are focusing our search on the Eastern suburbs. We are able to see houses on Howard Hanna and will visit again soon before our move. Renting is our top choice until we are certain of an area. Do you see children outside playing a lot (basketball, football, tag, army, chalk, bikes, snow forts, sledding, etc.)? Which subdivision are you in? Which township?

Squirrel Hill has nice parks that I do actually see kids outside sometimes. Kids don't come out often anywhere these days however. They are glued to computers and the parents are blaming McDonalds for them being fat. Ha ha.

It's 2010, kids playing outside is an outdated concept.

Squirrel Hill is eastern, but does it count as the suburbs?

Driving thorugh Edgewood I sometimes see walkers and runners exorcising in fair weather. The kids probably are playing behind their house's.

The only suburbs due east from Pittsburgh that aren't good for raising kids are (in order): parts of Wilkinsburgh, most of Homestead, most of McKeesport, Duquense, parts of Penn Hills, Braddock, Rankin, parts of Clairton, parts of North Braddock, & parts of Swissvale. Parts of East Pittsburgh, parts of North Versallies,& Glassport aren't too great either. Northwest is Westmoreland County which has parts of Arnold & parts of New Kensington aren't good locations for raising kids. In Mon. Valley to the southeast areas not good for kids are Monoseen & Donora.

Although mostof these areas are more likey have more kids playing around because it's the hood. There are probably kids playing in the eastern suburbs. Don't take my word for it cause I don't live on the east side.

Not if we all take a stand and make them go out or no video games.

I keep hearing about Squirrel Hill and the homes look lovely but the commute for my husband would not be great. I'm afraid we have to go farther out.

Would Oakmont work for you? It is a walkable community and has a really nice park by the river. Kids do ride bikes there and such, but I confess kids are not out as much as the old days. If that place is possible, check it out. Go down to Riverside Park and have a walk around. Kids actually walk to school. Yes, that still exists in some places. That is my recommendation.

I have thought about Oakmont and will look there. He'd be going the opposite way to Greensburg so maybe it would not be too bad.
