We keep city-data on at work and keep the forum preview function running, so as a result we end up lurking on at least 10-12 different forums every day. There's four of us in this office, so you guys have at least four Virginians who read you (at least, from time to time)! I was really into this forum last year, then got more interested in Austin and Charlotte's forum for awhile. Now I'm getting interested in this forum again. You guys have some good topics, and I'm impressed by many of the posts written by Brian.

ps. Katiana, in addition to Pittsburgh, the Denver forum is one of my office's favorites!

Thanks, Caladium! The Denver forum is one of the most respectful on CD. Not to say we don't disagree. If only we could quit talking about driving in the snow, year-round!

city-data is great for that. There are some forums I follow for awhile, it's a great way to get a sense of a place. I actually follow Austin from time to time. My impression is that most people are severely underpaid, but they all seem quite happy and content with living in Austin, and find that trade-off acceptable. A lot of very interesting posters there as well.

I actually quite enjoy the NOVA forum. Best posters in the MD/DC/NOVA nucleaus are on the NOVA forum. I like the jobs and various ethnicities/cultures to be found in that area.

Interesting you were following a few southern cities. I was viewing Raleigh for awhile, and there was a great thread about porches - people screen them up, put TV's out there, fridges out there, and they seemed to just love them. Real interesting, as you get viewpoints into places from things like that.

Besides Pittsburgh and NoVA/DC/MD, I also frequent Hawaii and Las Vegas. There are other cities I will for a few days or so, until they run their course, and I find myself ignoring all the threads from their respective city. So, I turn them off again. I was following Miami and Fort Lauderdale for quite some time, I like all of their many immigration-related, and Latino-related stuff.

From time to time I follow Detroit or Michigan (and oddly I really dislike the MI's thinking on those forums though - which is ironic as on the Pittsburgh forum, I REALLY like the originally from MI people on this forum - people like BrianTH and AlleghenyAngel). I actually find myself liking and agreeing with most Pittsburgh thinking. It's kind of true that like-minded people often end up seeking out the same kind of cities.

In short, interesting post, and thought I'd follow up on it.

I now live in Oakland, CA, but I was born at Allegheny General Hospital and lived in Greentree till I was two. Moved to Greenville (near Sharon, PA) till five and then moved to Cranberry Twp, back when it was way rural.

We tore down our family home on Freedom Rd. a few months after my mother died. And pretty much we all hate Cranberry now. Sad really.... it used to be a beautiful bucolic place to live....

But we will move back east at some point.... where we're not sure of....

I'm the one (so far) who selected Beaver County. Where I live is less than two miles to either the Allegheny County or Butler County lines.

Yup, I think lots of people do that. The only city we've followed regularly month in and month out is Greenville, SC. We love that forum! We're even thinking of taking a little office field trip down there, just to check it out.

That seems a little far fetched, IMO. It's ok to have a reason like you want to know specifically who lives where because you're marketing fruit arrangements. That's my guess, anyway, and I don't think anyone would mind if that was your reason. Just my opinion.

Yes and no. If you live or grew up in Wilkinsburg or Dormont or Penn Hills or Greentree, how much different is that really than say, East Liberty, Beechview, or Westwood?

I grew up in the city. Only lived in a suburb for one year (Wilkinsburg when I was 6 or 7), wait no, another half a year in Baldwin. Lived mostly in Garfield and Banksville, with some short stints in Brookline, Mount Washington and even downtown for a half a year. I found this forum because I was writing a novel that takes place largely in Pittsburgh's old Lower Hill District. Was doing research on streets and places that are no more. I live in L.A. now, usually wake up to this place. That and the Post Gazette. I always look in on Pittsburgh first, read some threads and if I have anything to add I will. Sometimes its just nice to 'hear' Pittsburgh voices, hear the names of places I used to go, neighborhoods, restaurants, clubs, etc. If I had it to do over again I don't think I'd leave home. And the real reason is just that, It's home, and with all its imperfections I'll always love it. But I'm dug in now, have a wife and a family and a mortgage, and work that I love, so I'm probably here to stay. This forum, other than the sporadic conversations I have with old friends, a few relatives that I still have back there, is as close as I get to the nostalgia I have for my home, for my youth. When I was a young guy I couldn't wait to get out of there. It's not very uncommon to have wanderlust at that age. I've seen a lot of the country, some of the world, have lived in two or three major American cities, but Pittsburgh really is a great town. Not too big, not too small, get anywhere in about a half hour, the easy access to urban life and rural life as well, people that for the most part mean what they say, it's more rare than you might think.

I grew up in Beaver Falls, and one of its suburbs, Patterson Heights (Beaver County). I now live in Louisville, Colorado.

There were many days at work, even though we all worked in PA ,that I would happen to be the only Pennsylvanian and all my co workers were from West Virginia and Ohio .
