Finally!

Now we just need to make sure there is still funding available for HSR by the time that study is available.

well theres a couple ways to look at it. the main thing is they applied. nobody quite knew where the new penndot stood. second...it would lower the cost of operation allowing penndots rail budget to go further. third....it will improve trip times for through trains. in some ways we should not expect any moves west of harrisburg until the study mentioned upthread is complete. why its taken this long to look at faster trips west of harrisburg is an excellent question...as is when will it be complete. as for whether its likely to be funded...not sure. its more of a sure thing for immediate construction since theres no freight agreement...otoh ca might get the lions share again and little love has been shown to pa by the fra lately

I'm from the Chicago area, and I'd love to have a realistic ground alternative to reaching the East Coast vs. flying. A high-speed route utilizing Pittsburgh as an intermediate stop to Philly / NYC would be spectacular. Hope it happens eventually.

No date was set for decisions on the funding.
Pennsylvania in 2006 completed a $145 million project to improve the Harrisburg-to-Philadelphia corridor, shortening trips by 30 minutes. Ridership has increased more than 70 percent since then and set a record of 1.28 million passengers for the 2009-10 fiscal year.
The state got another $25.65 million for improvements to the segment as part of Mr. Obama's first round of rail funding in 2010.
Meanwhile, work is starting on a one-year $1.5 million study of possible improvements to the far inferior Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg segment, where Amtrak operates only one daily train at speeds less than half of those east of Harrisburg.
McCormick Taylor, headquartered in Philadelphia with an office here, will perform the study, which is 50 percent federally funded.

After reviewing the facts and figures the Pittsburgh region can wait till the 2030s intill HSR comes. The Current region cannot support it and eastern PA deserves it more.

Someone didn't get the memo that Pittsburgh is the #1 large American metro of the future:

Burgh Diaspora - Economic Development From Geographic Mobility

I'm also a little confused about how Harrisburg, and not Pittsburgh, could be considered worthy for HSR.

But--whatever. Maybe Ohio will get its act back together and we can start working with them again.
