I don't think Shadyside is overhyped. It's main business district, like Sq. Hill's, is more complete than others. Not too mention that fact that it has three business districts. It doesn't have a library, post office or movie theater but it basically has everything else. Other neighborhoods aren't as complete and you have to leave the neighborhood for things.

Another reason why Shadyside is no nice is that it is flat and fairly compact. In comparison, Greefield is built on a hill. For example, if live by the Brusters would you really want to walk to the Giant Eagle? I wouldn't.

I regularly suggest the Mexican War Streets. Check out the discussion here: Young Professional Moving to Pittsburgh.

Thanks for the suggestion, MLNorth. I read it and think it sounds promising. I lived in D.C. for 24 years am am not naive about paying attention on the streets, but would I be giving up a reasonable amount of safety in this neighborhood?

I often come home very late, park, check my mail, and head up to my apartment without feeling concerned. That being said, I don't spend the night milling about the streets or the park.

There's a pub down the street that I walk home from after midnight, and during the day I walk all over the place without feeling threatened.

Going through Webster Ave. is a different story. While if you live in the residential streets you'd know there is no turning back, because of the on going crime and that most youth led the thug life. In Terrence Village, Crawford Roberts Hill, even West Oakland you live with the bloods. If you live in Bedford Dwelling, Middle Hill you've got cripz. However, Upper Hill is safe. Gang rivalry is stays hot but not as bad as the '90's, still I'd rank the Hill as one of the top 5 baddest hoods of da Burgh. Also, there are so many teenage pregnancies...
Really?

Did the OP ask about where not to live? Did he/she ask about walkable neighborhoods where gangs and violence exist? The largest drug market? Teen pregnancy? Bloods? Crips? But thanks anyway....Geez!

[quote=BrianTH Just a minor note, but I think "lost cause" implies a finality that is unwarranted. The Hill District in general isn't as bad as many people suggest--crime rates in several part really aren't unusually high, there has been some new investment there already, and I think more is likely to follow as demand for space near Downtown and Oakland continues to rise. Those other neighborhoods may have longer to wait, but I think eventually they will start redeveloping as well.[/QUOTE]

I know that the OP doesn't need to know about the Hill, I was just voicing my thoughts on the Hill after BrianTH's post!!!
