Maybe you should take your hos and get out then?

Who cares if you personally don't like it, the simple fact is it's the number one song, which means a WHOLE lot of people are listening to it,
I'm going to quote this logic the next time somebody complains about how lame WDVE is...

It's just odd seeing adults make sweeping generalizations about entire music genres when they don't even know 1/4 of what the genres consist of. Broaden your musical horizons a bit folks, it's not going to kill ya.

Hell, my mom is 50 and her iPod has Rick James, Cheap Trick, Interpol, Notorious B.I.G., and Gnarles Barkley on the same playlist.
Wish I could rep you again. This post is spot-on. People that are quick to place judgment Wiz and rap in general do so only after hearing a few pop cross-over tracks with generic lyrics.

Haters should take the time to listen to some classics and underground stuff, and tracks from Wiz's early mixtapes before commenting on how much they think an entire genre of music sucks. Otherwise, your "opinions" aren't even worth they electricity used to post them.

I wanted to rep you on this but couldn't, but I agree 200% on this. The problem once again goes back to cliched radio. No one knows who Interpol are because they don't get played on the radio.

Hard not to be a hater if all you listen to is mainstream. If you think the Grammys are where it's at musically, then you are likely completely mainstream and your idea of any given genre is limited by that. There are so many artists in all genres that never get heard. For me, most often, that's where the real surprises are.

I have a hard rock background. From the acid rock of the late sixties (Hendrix, Cream, Moby Grape, Yardbirds, Canned Heat et all) to the Metallica of the 1990s. I still listen to Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and a host of other rock bands. The Stones and the Beatles too. I had a foray into punk (Fear, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, the Clash etc.) In my "softer" times, I have a soft spot for the singer songwriters of the 1970's(James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Gram Parsons, The Eagles). Most of it pretty much mainstream but all along I have listened to different stuff too. Hard core rap out of Oakland. NWA Straight Outta Compton. A whole bunch of stuff I couldn't name. I try not to label and to be too narrow minded.

But C'mon. Justin Bieber. Taylor Swift. P Diddy. Lil Wayne. Fitty Cent. Black Eyed Peas. Rhianna. These are all neatly done, glossy packaged stuff. Pure saccharin / sugar. I guess there are worse things but like sweet drinks, having too much can result in a hangover.

Hate to break it to you young whippersnappers, but the first #1 rap hit was done by a baby-boomer, Debbie Harry and Blondie singing the Rapture. As always, we boomers set the tone in the music world.

I know "Rapture." It was one of the first songs registered in my memory bank. And Fab Five Freddie was given the first "shout-out" in that song too. (He went on to be the host of Yo! MTV Raps later.)

I would hope you would agree. MTV debuted 30 years ago. There is about two generations of music listeners that probably "see" a song before they even hear it on the radio. Certainly, I like many groups from the 70s and to this day really don't know what the artists actually look like. However, it is socially ambitious to think anyone born after 1980 doesn't seek some visual representation ("gloss") for their pop artists. Remember, "Video Killed The Radio Star".

Actually, I think Wiz Khalifa intended the song to pay homage to Pittsburgh's colors in general (the city flag, Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, bridges, etc.)

Also, I'm seeing a lot of posts talking about "class" and how the "Black and Yellow" song is "low class". This is very disheartening to see in a Pittsburgh forum. As the capital of Appalachia, the rest of the U.S. doesn't exactly view Pittsburgh as "high class" or anything of the sort. What is attractive to me about Pittsburgh is the down-to-earth, blue-collar feel to the city. I can't speak for anyone else, but in my opinion Pittsburgh has never been pretentious.

If this is a run-of-the-mill "gangsta rap" argument I think it can be laid to rest at this point. So called "gangsta rap" has been around for about 25 years at this point and rap in general for 35? 40? Once again, I would think Pittsburgh being the capital of Appalachia would have extensive exposure to "mountain music" which certainly is by far an older tradition than any rap. I don't see how you could be offended by the lyrics of any other genre after listening to mountain music. I happen to think it is quite cool that a city such as Pittsburgh with no native music tradition of its own has produced a hip-hop song that everyone in the country digs.
