I'm sure this isn't the right place to ask but I didn't know where to turn to and you all have already been so helpful so I thought I would ask here.

We are moving to PA from DE soon and will need a new car. As I am sure you know, there is no sales tax in DE so I figured we would buy the car here first before we move. But then when we move to PA, we will have to pay registration all over again...right? Is there anything else we will have to pay? I was just trying to figure out if we could wait to buy the car or if we would save a lot of money if we just bought now. Thoughts?

Don't hold me to this, I will try to confirm, but I believe you should be in the clear if you buy it and get it titled in Delaware. Then you move to PA and you have to get it retitled but you're not buying so shouldn't be a sales tax issue. But I wouldn't put it past PA to have some kind of exception to this.

BTW, just to be clear, it doesn't matter what state the car dealer is in. So your dealer can be in DE, PA, MD, NJ, whatever makes sense, just so long as you get it titled at your current DE address before moving. If you're financing the car you'll have a mild PITA issue with the fact that the finance company will physically hold the title, but people move states all the time with financed cars so they will be able to deal with it. Just makes it a little more hassle.

Okay, here's the info you need, it's all spelled out: http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/new_resid..._vehicle.shtml

So the reality on this: you have to own it for 6 months before you are free from the sales tax. Otherwise, they figure you knew what you were doing (trying to avoid it), which, of course, would be true. So if you won't be moving for 6 months, buy the car now. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

Well, at least that's what it looks like on the surface. It's not like it actually says "Even if your state had no sales tax your need to remit to PA." But it says you need a sales tax receipt and you won't have one, so I'm assuming this will be the case.
