Default Pittsburgh misses out on Google's 1-gig internet

Looks like Kansas City won it.

It's a bummer, I really think Pittsburgh would have been almost a slam-dunk for them. Carnegie-Mellon is arguably the best computer science school in the world and Google has a campus in Pittsburgh that focuses on network applications. I wonder if the topography made it too expensive to roll out such an extensive network.

Keep in mind they chose Kansas City, KS NOT MO.

The overarching reasons seem to be that they wanted a smaller, more suburbanish city versus a place with a large urban core. Also, KCK is struggling economically compared to other cities in its metro area, whereas Pittsburgh has been on and continues to rise.
