I will be working in Greensburg, PA, my girlfriend will be working in downtown Pittsburgh, the house we are considering seems to be to far away to jump on the turpike in Irwin. What is the commute like using Route 30 to the Edgewood/Swissvale entrance to the parkway east, during rush hour? Thanks for any help! Also want to thank everyone for all the help on other threads have found out alot of information from this forum.

You will be looking at around an hour commute to downtown during worst-case rush hour conditions. Its about half that during non traffic times.

To Edgwood/Swissvale exit from about Dunkin Donuts in Irwin... I'm going to say 20-30min depending in lights and getting on Parkway East at Wilkinsburg (this is the worse point). Worse time is 7A to 8:30A, then it is much better as you get closer to 9A. I drive 30 to Point Breeze everyday, and 30 never gets really bad, except 2 light delay at 48 (by K-Mart) maybe. When I used to commute to downtown, 45min was the norm. Drive back is about 15min longer until after 6P.

How far is the house you are looking at located from the NHT or Monroeville Turnpike exchanges?

If you guys are in North Irwin, then another option would be to use 993 through Trafford, then 130 through Pitcairn, Tri-Boro through Turtle Creek and join 30 right on the border of East Pittsburgh & Forest Hills. A lot less lights and better average speed.
I wouldn't even consider the Turnpike for commute in, especially factoring $1.10 toll and wasted gas on sitting in Parkway East parking lot.
BTW for Greensburg commute... skip 30 and take 130, less stressful.
