Good to see that Pittsburgh has their own Comicon and even an anime celebration Tekkoshocon.

News - Tekkoshocon, Anime and Japanese Culture Convention in Pittsburgh

But I think the Comicon ought to be in downtown instead of Monroeville.

Atlanta's anime thing is Momo at Georgia Tech but the big event is Dragon-con which pretty much covers most geek pop culture and gaming. Dragon-con also can attract some big stars, although last year...not as good. About 30,000 people attend Dragon-con and is second only to (I believe) Comicon San Diego. Like to see these Pittsburgh conventions expand to be among the majors.

The Comicon draws very well in Monroeville, why change it?

Speaking of drawing very well... I was just in Orlando last weekend and attended Megacon. Holy crap was that place crowded. Wall to wall nerds everywhere.

It lacks the city vibe. The area is a strip mall with parking lots. In other words, the suburban environs are not as good. The city gives it more excitement. In Atlanta, Dragon-con is downtown and the much smaller Momo is in Midtown.

I think a lot of those geeks don't have the money to afford to stay Downtown, Monroeville works well for them. And no, I'm not a fat baby-boomer walking around the show in a Batman outfit.

Well, all I can say is what it is like in Atlanta and it probably is more expensive. Typically the nerds share room expenses. Besides Tekkoshocon was held at the Wyndham Grand Hotel near The Point. How cool is that!

Bless you. What's funnier are the overweight middle-aged Wonder Women.

No, the funniest thing I ever heard/saw was when a faux Spider-Man was fighting a faux Batman at the convention, and the guy behind me said, That could never happen, one is Marvel, the other DC.

You can't make that up.

If they can do Anthrocon in Downtown, I don't see why they can't do Comicon.

Anthrocon sounds too specialized. I'd consider combining Tekkoshocon with Anthrocon and add in science fiction, fantasy, role playing, gaming, etc. Unless people prefer to have many small conventions rather than one big one. Plus Anthrocon is done in the summer which is probably better for attracting the teens.

Atlanta's Dragon-con started off as a science fiction and gaming thing and added fantasy, anime, horror, and just about any thing the geek community likes. It grows and grows and I think this year it will cover five hotels.

These -cons do allow vendors to sell there stuff directly to their niche market but there are also the panels, meet the stars, entertainment, but the most interesting thing is the people watching.

I remember one con where I saw a really long line. I thought, this must be good. So I got inside along with the excited audience, then the announcer came out and said, and "And now the person you've been waiting for....Voltaire!" That elicited cheers from the crowd...but I sat there thinking..."who's Voltaire?". The guy came out with guitar, a mosh pit quickly formed in front of the stage, and the guy sang zombie song after zombie song. Nothing highly creative or entertaining. In fact, I swear, two of the songs use the same melody. After he was done, he walked off backstage while the crowd chanted "one more song...one more song". I was out the door thinking, no thanks, I'm fine. However, some of the performers were good but admittedly for eclectic tastes.
