I'm not laughing.

Chains I wish would open stores in Pgh (all furniture):
Crate & Barrel
Design within Reach
Room & Board

But it'll never happen. West Elm has yet to open in Bakery Square. I couldn't even find flatware at Macy's downtown store that they sell on their website.

Has anyone ever actually made this argument? It seems like we get a Lowe's/Applebee's/Gamestop combo popping up every 3 months.

Crate & Barrel is open at Ross Park. Been there since last fall. More than one store here isn't likely in the cards soon, although I noticed that Pottery Barn on Walnut closed so perhaps that is a possibility. Or maybe that's something they could put in the closing Borders location.

I've seen people pining for the days when ladies would put on white gloves and pearls to shop in the Downtown department stores, but that is a rather antiquated notion of retail.

Wow. I had no idea. Thank you both.

I vividly recall Pittsburgh being labeled "behind the times" 10 years ago because there wasn't much upscale shopping in the region, and "backwards" for not wanting a huge swath of downtown to be torn down to make room for it.

Meanwhile, half the upscale shopping in all those wonderful "other cities" has closed because the people in those cities have finally reached a point within the last five years where they can't afford to live beyond their means anymore.

And please give me a bunch of reputation points for my 3,000th post. Thanks.

I'd say we have a pretty good mix of retail. High-end national stores (Saks, Nordstrom, Tiffany, Louis Vitton, Burberry) good shopping districts (Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, South Side) with locally-owned stores. Lots of funky shops, and lots of middle of the road. And retail seems to be holding up pretty well here. I just got back from California and was amazed at the acres and acres of empty shopping centers.
