Just take the PA Turnpike until you get to Breezewood and then get onto 70 East towards Maryland. You'll stay on this stretch for about an hour or so passing Hagerstown along the way. Once you get into the Frederick area, you want to get off at Exit 52A and follow 15 South towards Leesburg. From there, take 7 East or the Dulles Toll Road into Reston. I've done it before and it takes between 3 1/2 to 4 hours depending on time of day/commute traffic.

The quickest way from A to B is a straight line.

The shortest way is, but the shortest way isn't always the quickest way. In this case, to follow a straight line you'd need a tunneling machine, and that isn't going to be very fast.

Neuro's route is the fastest. You will have around $8 or so in turnpike toll each way, but it's worth it given that any other routing will slow you down. You'll have to average (through the whole trip) nearly 70 mph to do it in 3 1/2. May be a stretch, but 4 hours shouldn't be unrealistic.

The stretch of 70 south of Breezewood to the MD border is all set at 55 mph speed limit. I wouldn't say it's always a speed trap but that does mean you have to be a little more cautious, and I have seen cops there. (Watch out for the long downhill after Town Hill in either direction.) My typical speed is around 75 and I haven't been stopped in well over a decade on highways. Good luck.

I agree. Also, the PA Turnpike has plenty of traps. Best thing to do if you are trying to make time is go about 7 miles over the limit and wait till you get passed and follow that person about 1/4 mile back. Watch for his/her brake lights.

Of course I am not recommending you do such a thing, it is just that I have seen people do this.

Seriously. I met my family when they arrived on the Auto Train in Lorton, VA and saw the largest speed trap I had ever seen. A pack of at least 50 motorcycle cops just pulling everyone over. It was ridiculous. I never wanted to leave a town so quickly.

Hi, if I recall correctly, the auto train is in Lorton, not Reston. As such you are better off taking I-270 south to the capital beltway outer loop (I-495 south), crossing the American Legion Bridge into Virginia, then continuing on 495 until you reach the mixing bowl (intersection with I-95), then take I-95 south to Lorton.

So in summary:

Pennsylvania Turnpike to Breezewood exit
I-70 east to Frederick (I-270 interchange)
I-270 south to capital beltway (I-495)
Beltway outer loop (I-495 south), crossing American Legion Bridge to VA.
Exit mixing bowl to I-95 south
I-95 south to Lorton exit (exit 163)
Amtrak station right off exit
