There are a lot of Thai places, and a couple Ethiopian places.

There are quite a few bars/pubs that feature PA microbrews. Pittsburgh only has a few truly local breweries, but you can find those beers in bars, and there are also some brewpubs.

Outside of a few easily-identified areas, Pittsburgh is relatively low crime for a larger city. Petty property crimes are a little more common in some areas than others (and not always the areas considered "bad" neighborhoods). Among the neighborhoods we have been discussing, probably the lowest crime is Squirrel Hill, but I think all of them would be acceptable to you given what you have described.

Default Location, location, location...

It's a moving target. The fellowship is in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, so it's a mix of inpatient at UPMC Presbyterian-Montefiore and UPMC Shadyside, and perhaps Magee-Womens' Hospital, with some outpatient at various clinics at UPMC Presbyterian-Montefiore complex, along with home visits as well.

Thank you.

If you want to be able to walk to work most of the time, look at Oakland and Shadyside. North Oakland is probably where you would want to look within Oakland, as it places you between the Oakland hospitals and UPMC Shadyside, and is also the nicest section of Oakland. It's also worth noting that parts of Bloomfield and Friendship are still a short and easy walk to UPMC Shadyside.

If someone is coming from cities and ask for Mexican food, I don't think they mean Taco Bell.

Shadyside, Squirrel Hill and Point Breeze come to mind. Parts of Oakland could be good as well. If you are into cycling to work, I would add South Side, because the cycling to Oakland is mostly trail and pretty easy. South Side is the most happening place, but a mix of younger in there.

Shadyside, North Oakland, Friendship, and parts of East Liberty and Highland Park would be the right neighborhoods. It's easy to take the bus (free/part of your tuition) to all those locations. The 71A, 71B, 71C, 71D, and 75 will take you just about everywhere you need to go, and there are other convenient routes that I may not know about. The Strip District, where you'll probably want to do at least part of your grocery shopping, is convenient via other bus routes.

Port Authority of Allegheny County > Home (not the most user-friendly website in existence; post or PM if you have specific questions).

There's a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's in East Liberty, and soon there'll be a Target. Market District, the upscale division of local supermarket chain Giant Eagle, is at the corner of Centre and Negley, on the border of Shadyside/Friendship/East Liberty. If you'd like to live in a high-rise (highish, really), there are three at this corner. Shadyside Hospital is just down the street, and there's a bus every ten minutes to Oakland (Presby, Montefiore, Magee). The Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are a couple of bus stops east of here.

Are you going to have a car?

Default Car

Interns, residents and fellows are paid employees. I've found that tuition-paying, student benefits versus employee/faculty benefits vary by institution.

Yes, we have a car, and I need a car for home visits.

I'd prefer garage or off-street parking to on-street parking.

If on-street would prefer situations that aren't high-stress about how far away I might park each and every time, and hoping for parker-friendly sweeping times.

Thanks

Med students and undergrads get to ride the bus for free. Fellows and resident don't get free bus although they get free parking (pretty sure all the departments at Pitt give this).

Before renting a place with a garage or renting a garage separately, make sure your car will fit. You might find a place with off-street parking. If near a city parking lot you might be able to buy a permit. In some neighborhoods people put a chair in the street to reserve their spot.

Pittsburgh residents are using chairs, different items to stake out parking spots
