More info about permit parking, including maps of permit parking areas.
Residential Parking

Parking in Oakland is very tight. If you don't want to get a permit, prepare to park far away, or have to pay to park.

Robinson Street going from Trees Hall down to Center Ave is all non-permit. You just have to be aware of the street cleaning days (I think it's $35 if you get ticketed).

You also have to beware of the hoodlums from the Hill District who like to break into cars parked on that hill. There's nothing else around, so it provides pretty good cover. I park there daily and notice a new pile of broken glass about once a month (not even an exaggeration). I'm assuming it's people who leave GPS's, etc in plain few though.

Schenley Park I believe. Many CMU students would leave their cars there when I was an undergrad.

Since when has Oakland been permit parking. Just curious & maybe my memory is starting to fail, but I swear when I was in school there, there was no permit parking (granted this was like 7yrs ago)...and when I met up with some people at the Mad Mex there about a month ago I was ticked that everything was permit only.

Permit parking has spread to manyneighborhoods in the last ten years out of necessity. Especially Oakland, where years ago most undergrads did not have cars and now most have cars, it's become a problem. Whatever happened to kids taking the bus or walking to get around?

Where specifically are you going to be living in Oakland? This could affect recommendations.

I for instance live in South Oakland near the Boulevard. My summer roommate last year kept his car parked in Schenley Park as much of the south part of it is not metered nor permit. However, if you go this route, be sure to use common sense: don't leave any valuables in the car and check it out from time to time (if it's not in use that is).

Why is it so hard to get a permit?

I think more of the problem was when Pitt turned the biggest parking lot in town across the street from the library into a park. Now dont get me wrong i'm neither endorsing (it does make the area 500% nicer looking), or criticizing the move (was it smart to get rid of a parking lot in an area that already severly lacked parking?), just that I think its less the fact that kids have more cars now then they did 10yrs ago and more that there is substantially less parking options available.

Now I do wish that permit parking would spread to the SouthSide but that'll never happen.

Even though they did that, the city added a lot more parkiing underneath the Soldiers and Sailors lawn, a short distance away.

Not only that, they kept the parking spaces around the park and also spaces on Forbes where they didn't have it before.

As a net result, I'd say parking is a bit easier with all of the parking updates in recent years there.
