I'm a single 38 guy who lived in Shadyside for several years. Loved it. Love Pittsburgh. Don't know much outside of the east end of the city, though, except I dated someone in Irwin many years ago (was "ok"). Now I'm back for short or longer work cycle in Whitehall. Since I liked Shadyside, Point Breeze, Squirrel Hill (basically, some nice pubs and a little culture, and easy access to some outdoor fun), where should I take an apartment and still be near Whitehall to work? A 20 minute commute=next door to me, but I do understand when it's busy, that's a couple miles at best. It won't be like the east end, I know, but someone probably knows which area near there would be best given that I like little restaurants/pubs, some single-person charm, etc.

Mostly, I'll be close to the city and friends/family on weekends, so either way, I'm going to win.

thanks, guys.

I'd think your best bet is somewhere along the Mt. Lebanon/Dormont corridor, though I'm not sure what the commute to Whitehall would be. Perhaps 15-20 minutes via back roads?

Another option may be somewhere along the south side, commuting to Whitehall via Brownsville Rd. Your commute would probably be something similar.

I was going to suggest this as well. 15-20 minute commute to Whitehall, and you've got a nice little walkable area in Mt Lebanon with some pubs, restaurants, shops, etc. And you can take the T into Station Square or downtown. Seems like the perfect solution.

This would be my suggestion as well. The commute to Whitehall is just back roads from Mt. Lebo.
