I'm lazy enough that I don't like driving out of the city to shop so we never make it to places like Wallmart or Costco.
TJ's has better prices on most everything. I know I safe a ton on veggies there. TJ's meat section isn't my favorite. The ground meat 80% is a pretty good price and pretty good. It is fresh and doesn't have that gray lining you often get at Giant. Fish is a huge savings at TJ's.

As far as popularity, Giant is by far the most. Like someone said before, they never hear about people saying they like the place, but they have the market pretty much cornered. Even if you go to Community Market, it is owned by a Giant owner. They have this place where they want us. It makes me sick, but you can't beat those people with their fuel perks making everyone think they somehow save money. Ouch!

Giant Eagle is my favorite, until it's time to pull out my wallet.

I'm just curious, but are any of this grocery stores considered "neighborhood" stores? I mean, the kind that are surrounded by residential areas and which serve a pedestrian public?

Also, if you could design a market that did cater to a walking customer, how many blocks away would you be willing to hoof it before deciding that a car would be more convenient?

Do they sell anything that's not frozen?

There are times I would rather buy fish frozen shortly after catch, than "fresh" fish - you don't know how long it's been since they've been in the water. TJ's only has frozen fish, but a good selection. Great crab cakes.

Good fish is one thing I don't mind spending a little more for. I shop at the Penn Avenue Fish Market, in the Strip District. I save by not buying other things. I don't spend a lot on sweets and breads, for example. Or very much meat. And I drink very little besides water and tea. Speaking of tea, TJ's English Breakfast is very good iced, and it's $1.99 for 48 teabags.

I have read a lot about the frozen vs. fresh fish deal and I now buy frozen. I have seen enough fish boats to feel I would rather eat flash frozen fish over fresh. Most sushi is now flash frozen for safety, so I have been reading.

It all depends on your neighborhood.
