Default Moving to Pittsburgh area

Hi. We are relocating from CA..( so happy to be getting out of here!). My husband is in the army and is being transferred to a reserve base in Oakdale. What are some good towns near there to live. We were looking at Carnegie and Moon-Crescent Township. What are your opinions. By the way we have 2 year old twin and another on the way. What are the better hospitals in the area? Thanks

Welcome to the area!

The general surrounding area in and around Oakdale is a good, family friendly area.

This is from another post asking the same question:

"Crafton, Bridgeville, Robinson Township, Moon Township, Mt Lebanon, parts of Carnegie"

All good areas. Excellent schools in Mt Lebanon.

Hospitals in the area - well, you can't beat Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, voted one of America's Best Hospitals in 2006. Several excellent trauma hospitals in the area include UPMC Presbyterian, Allegheny General, and West Penn Hospital's Burn Unit. The UPMC Hospital system, in general is very good, with excellent ratings all around.

blessings, Shen

Trust me, you won't have a hard time finding good hospitals, like Shen said, ESPECIALLY Children's. Pittsburgh has some of leading and most respected hospitals and research centers in the world.

The reason why I asked about the hospitals is that I'm going to be giving birth there and I have such a good hospital here its scary to go somewhere new. Plus I have to find a new OBGYN when I get there. Thanks!

Magee Women's Hospital is THE maternity hospital. It's in Oakland, so it will be a big drive from Oakdale. West Penn also has an excellent maternity dept. Allegheny General too. If you look for a doctor affiliated with any of those hospitals, you'll be in pretty good hands.

Outside of those hospitals, you'll be looking at regional hospitals. Some are good - perhaps someone else here can elaborate on regional hospitals. You'll be nearish to Ohio General, but I've heard too many negative things about it...

This IS true, but be careful, their service and wait times are outrageous. My mother had surgery there a few years ago (successful surgery, no complaints) but the wait times and follow-ups and scheduling was so horrific and they kept lowering the cost of my mothers bill so often due to her "inconveniences" that her surgery was damn near free.

Good point boylocke, except I don't think they have wait times for deliveries. The OP is looking for a hospital to deliver her baby. ;-)

Where your Ob/gyn practices will determine where you have your baby. Some have priviledges (sp?) at many hospitals. Your insurance co will probably have a list of participating OBs. If you have a bit of time, ask around once you meet some people (neighbors, church friends, etc).
