This is a great resource.

Now someone needs to turn it into an interactive map . . .

Carrick is the undisputed burglary champion two years in a row! Take that Mt. Washington!

That is very easy to read and quite useful.

Some interesting facts:

5. Homicide – by Location: Most homicides (68.4%) in the City occurred in an area starting in Pittsburgh’s Northside extending through the Hill District going through East Liberty & Homewood and ending in the East Hills.

I was surprised how bad East Liberty still is. Guess it is the same old same old there. Wow!!

I really like how they break down the neighborhoods. Sure tells all and you can clearly see all the neighborhoods that are loaded with crime. Can't really argue statistics. Larimer is worse than I though as well. The Hill is what I would expect. Where is Terrance Village? I think I will stay clear of that area. I need to look that up.

Apparently, there is more crime in Bloomfield or Mt. Washington than in the Central North Side and Manchester, or Central North Side and East Allegheny, combined. There is more crime in the South Side Flats than in the Central North Side, Manchester, and East Allegheny combined. The South Side Flats had one homicide, but the other neighborhoods I listed above had none (go Manchester!).

Also, Homewood (North and South) and East Liberty appear to be the murder capitols, with 4-5 homicides in each. Larimer and Sheraden (yikes) are not far behind, with three homicides in each.

Beside the neighborhood statistics, this should be a good resource for researching other issues. For example, from the PG article:

Quote:
Most [homicide victims] were killed in retaliation, during robberies or over drugs, while just three of the city's 57 homicide victims were unintended targets. Most of those slain -- 42 -- had prior gun, drug and other charges.
This isn't intended to make light of homicides, but in the majority of cases it isn't a random crime.

Seems this past year was worse than '09 for murders. Wow, that is quite a jump.

I guess Terrance Village is pretty much in the Hill. I checked it out via Google Maps Street view. It was interesting to see the newer buildings that are all polished, but riddled with crime. That is my fear that East Liberty will become and the more I think about it, the more I fear it will be just that. Numbers don't lie and this past year wasn't good for East Liberty. I am still shocked that it is still that bad. It is sad there are that many murders and the average age is 29 years old. One has to wonder if drugs were legal, would we still have all these murders?

Pennsylvania Uniform Crime Reporting System

This is another good site to see crime rates in your community, if you live in a community outside of the city.

For example, this site allows me to view the crime statistics for Stowe Township and McKees Rocks in 2010 (zero homicides in either).

Imagine how much violent crime would drop if drugs were legalized. It's crazy if you think about it, so much crime is centered around the acquisition and distribution of drugs. Then again I'm sure the scumbags would pick a new way to make quick cash and the cycle would start all over again. It's something to think about though.

Also, it's no surprise that the South Side Flats have so much crime. One of the police officers I spoke with last year told me that the majority of the officers in the South Hills spend all of their time patrolling the South Side during the weekends (and subsequently they were extremely under manned elsewhere). Combine wall to wall bars, drunk young people coming from all over town to unwind, and an army of police and they're bound to pick up crime over and over again.

Mt. Washington is really strange though, this is the second year in a row where they've had tons of crime.
