So i was driving down Dinwiddie Street in hill district or the "uptown" area and it was quite amazing seeing how they re-done that whole street with new homes and apartment buildings; but what really amazed me was what their doing with the old "5th ave High School" they are converting the school into apartments!

I feel its a great idea i mean if you work downtown you can literally walk downtown in 10mins or even ride a bike in less. its gas prices continue to stay around this 4$ mark honestly who can afford to drive 30mins into the city everyday.

but anyways here is a pic what do you guys think is it going to work will people move in there? i think with all the new additions pnc for example and all the new young hires moving to the city this city life living will be in high demand!

If it is priced at all reasonably I think it will do well. Here is a little more info:

It's a beautiful building. People will move there if the rent is right. They're not going to attract high end prices though, not for now, not with the way uptown is so vacant.

Is this building the same location they partially shot for the movie Love and Other Drugs? It is a very striking building regardless.

I guess it depends on how you define high-end, but even though there isn't much going on in the immediate area, there are a gazillion buses passing by there on the way to Downtown and Oakland.

I've always thought the 5th Ave school was a gorgeous building when I'd pass by it on the bus. I hope it does well. Who knows, maybe Uptown development can start in the middle and spread towards downtown & Oakland instead of the other way around.

On a side note: There is another former city school on the corner of Carson & 10th that seems to have been sitting vacant for years. It would be great to see something in the this building as well.

That is my thought as well. It may in fact happen both ways--as we have discussed before, it is really up to the family which owns so much of Uptown, but I think if they decide it is time to cash in, things could start moving pretty quickly.

$1,500/month for a 2-BR unit? That is on par with other comparable loft projects in the generally more desirable Strip District and North Side. Given the nefarious reputation of Uptown I'm not so certain these units will sell like hot cakes.

What a great building. Thanks for posting the story and picture. It is great to see something like building saved. I really hope it works out really well and gives some hope to that area.

SCR - Please! with the location to Oakland, Downtown, the CEC, Mercy Hosp, DU..I have no doubt people will snatch these up real quick, just to get the early bird special knowing the potential the neighborhood has to become and getting while the getting is good.

I see this project being more the catylist for jump starting Uptown revitialization than the CEC or the DU projects.
