I don't believe it can be torn down because it is a historic property. On the other hand, Pittsburgh love to tear stuff down, so I guess if someone of power and influence told everyone it was in terrible shape and everyone believe them like they always do, they could have it torn down.

Yes it is close enough to Pitt to be walkable to the campus.

Yes. Specifically, the plaster in Schenley was falling apart, and it contained asbestos. Fixing the problem would have been hugely expensive.

Ha, ha, ha. Rookies. People fall for this same old stuff all the time. One would think people would catch on.

Here is the real story. PPS wanted to get rid of that building and ship the kids into another. People in the Hill wanted to save Schenley. The powerful people told everyone, hey the school is falling apart and the kids are breathing in asbestos. You know the plaster if falling. Please! Anyone who has half a brain knows to fix asbestos you encapsulate it. Cheap and easy, with paint. I don't even know if there really is asbestos. It wouldn't surprise me if there was one pipe in the building that had an asbestos wrap on it and they reported it in a way to suit their needs.

Bottom line, the Hill District lost out as everyone knew they would and Schenley which has been there a long time and is an awesome structure is no more. The vote WAS CLOSE however. 4-5. Of course the 4 that wanted to keep the school certainly wanted the kids to keep breathing asbestos. ha ha ha. Are people really this gullible?

I can't stop laughing at the people that keep falling for this stuff over and over again. Same thing with the Civic Arena. People think it is going to fall down or something. Yeah right.

No just someone that knows when people have been duped with the old fear card. There are entire political platforms that revolve around fear and it WORKS!

People are under the impression you need to gut Schenley High School because there is asbestos in the plaster. Not true and I am sure the building will be used by someone when the coast is clear.

Bottom line the Hill District got screwed and now the kids are going to Reizenstein, which is a dump.

It does seem to work on all levels of government. I am actually surprised the vote was so close to save the school, which is pretty impressive. Sure is a beautiful building. Oh well, it is toast and no longer part of PPS.
