I guess I just don't understand how something such as public transportation can get to the point that it needs life support. How was it allowed to get to this point in the first place? I don't use pubic transportation, but I feel that it is a very important and vital asset to this region, not just the city. We had "bailouts" for major corporations, someone needs to come in and clean this mess up and get the Pittsburgh region an acceptable public transportation solution.

Full transit service for commuting to work in town/oakland isn't really very efficient.

If you have a trip from Allison Park or Holiday Park, its basically deadheading its way out to the burbs in the morning, and coming back to the city empty in the afternoon.

The problem of all-day riders in the densely populated inner cities is a different problem than the suburban commuter trips. Many of those inner city people are often stranded if the busses aren't running and use PAT for shopping trips and other non-work transportation.

I think I'd want to break the overall transit problem down, and address different part of it in different ways.

IMO few people care about bus service. Frankly, most of the people that care about bus service are the ones that ride a bus. Corbett is not going to come to the rescue. A true leader should recognize this and formulate a plan.

The only way that I see Corbett giving more to transit is if Fitzgerald and/or Ravenstahl comes to him with big cuts from the unions contingent upon increased funding.

I think more people care about it than many think. If you have a business that relies on workers using buses, you will care. If you have rental property on a discontinued bus line, it's a problem. In addition there will be more congestion on the roads.

Dealing with the bus situation is a problem that Fitzgerald and Ravenstahl have to really deal with more than the governor.

It is more of a local problem, and the governor really isn't in a position to dictate local transit policy. All the governor can do is to ask the legislature to appropriate money after a plan to get PAT in order is formulated.

Plus you will care if you will be drivinig around downtown trying to find an avgailable parking spot. When you do, the you will care when you have to fork out "x" amount of dollard to pay PER DAY to park.

Once again, Boy Mayor will have to start to take notice, care or speak up, which he hasn't yet.

Non-bus riders will start caring, especially those on the Parkway East if these cuts happen. Look at the chart that details the changes. All the East Busway Flyers would be eliminated except for one (P7 McKeesport Flyer) ! This includes the P67, P68, and P12. All of those serve Monroeville/parts of Monroeville. Guess which road those former riders (ones with cars, at least) will pile up on? Traffic backs up to Churchill regularly as it is.

The mayor has nothing to do with PAT.

Impending PAT cuts to the Eastern suburbs + Impending long-term Squirrel Hill Tunnel reconstruction project = Nation's worst gridlock?

PAT is a county entity not a city of Pittsburgh entity. The mayor has held meetings concerning the impact of the reductions on city residents.
