Are you kidding? The effects of that population loss are all around us... in the form of blight, urban prairie, and abandonment.

Who cares? I can see the skyline from my street.
Okay, now I sound like Sarah Palin: I can see Russia from my house. LOL
Seriously, though, McKees Rocks has the same problems as adjacent Esplen (a city neighborhood).

Just as a reference point, people should watch some movies filmed in Pittsburgh from the 70's/80's/90's to see how ghetto this city was. Some good examples:
- Martin (1977)
- Two Evil Eyes (1990)
- Silence of the Lambs (1991)
- Innocent Blood (1992)
- Flashdance (1983)
- Bloodsucking Pharaohs In Pittsburgh (1991)
Hell, even Robocop's post-apocalyptic Detroit setting was partially filmed in Pittsburgh in the 80's.

The effects, yes, I understand. But that doesn't get us to the solution or the ideal number. As mentioned before, many factors went into this, including it being typical for more people to cram into a smaller house than is usual now. Only some of that population was actually because of a higher number of households. I couldn't begin to tell you the proportion, but it's part of the calculation. But those effects are just the current status now. What is important is where we move on from the current status, not measuring against 50 years ago. That was my point.
Perhaps you still disagree and that's fine, but I really don't think we achieve a damn thing by measuring population against 50 years ago. That's the same living in the past mentality that has affected so many things around here for so long. Bring the mills back! LOL. Doesn't work that way.

Well aware of that, was just needling you, hence the smiley.

It is what it is. Would I like to stay in the city and be able to live on our middle class salaries and afford to put my kids through good schools? Sure. The reality is that when my daughter is a little older, we are going to move to an inner ring suburb so that we can buy a home on a larger lot in a safe neighborhood and send her to good public schools. Where in the city can I do that? We can't afford a larger home in the area that feeds into Allderdice without mortgaging our future. This issue has been brought up time and again yet people just don't seem to understand how important these things are to people.

Heh, I got cash from the production crew of Innocent Blood. At the time they were filming I had just moved here and was working in Market Square. They were filming in and around the Original Oyster House sometime during the winter of 1991/92, and at night. They put up some lighting or something on top of our building. (I don't think there was a camera position up there.) The business was on the next floor below (3rd floor, above where MixStirs Cafe most recently was), and I worked an evening shift which ran until midnight or often later. They paid us some cash to stay late to have access to the hatch that went to the roof. Only worked for one night, though. The next night they were back but had devised some kind of external way of getting up there.
Never actually watched the movie....

I agree with you there. I'm sure the ideal number for our population is way above what it is now. What would Pittsburgh's population be if all of the half-abandoned neighborhoods like Beltzhoover, Allentown, Marshall-Shadeland, much of the Hill District, Homewood, Lincoln-Lemington, Larimer, East Liberty, Garfield, Spring Garden, East Allegheny, Hazelwood, Sheraden/ Esplen, etc. were at the capacity of, say, Shadyside? I'm not saying this will ever happen again, but it was probably like this in the 1940s.

It's awesome, I recommend it. People interested in the area should Netflix some of these films, they're all a time capsule of how the Burgh used to be.

I've done some similar back-of-the-envelope calculations before:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/14322880-post104.html
I think around 375K is a decent estimate assuming no development of brownfields, upper-floors, and the like. Assume all that too, and maybe around 425K, give or take. Much after that, and we are tearing down a lot of existing structures to increase density.
Of course we are a long way from 375K or 425K. But again, those are just small fractions of the current metro population, let alone the likely future metro population.

SCR, if you really want to help convince people to move to the city, follow the lead of Allegheny Angel and do photo tours on you tube (and also here). You have a gift for photography and a camera you got for Christmas. The trees have leafed out and the skies are often sunny at least part of the day. So, no more excuses. It's time for photos.
Show us the neighborhoods, the buildings, the parks. Show us your favorite place to get a peirogi, the best park bench, all the little details that make living in a city so appealing. Do interviews with urban pioneers and chronicle how easy (or enjoyable) it was for them to fix up a property, and why they love their neighborhood. Try to share these photo tours in as many places as possible--maybe even the local paper will run them if you often your services for free.
Why waste your time berating other people for making lifestyle choices--that doesn't accomplish anything. Instead, be part of the solution. Show people the world as you see it, the world you want them to consider, and you might have more influence than you think.
