Best ice cream I've had was at Penn State's Creamery. PSU ought to open a store at its Pittsburgh campus and sell it there too.

They also have a Gelato counter at the Giant Eagle marketplace in Robinson that was quite good last time I was in town! We always liked Brusters and Rita's Italian Ices--I like the Gelati's.

It would no doubt sell out and be very popular. The do use gum in their ice cream which helps it stay creamy and not crystalize, but I am not a fan of that texture. Goodness, I guess people know I am a bit of an ice cream nut! I only have two top level choices, Haagen Daz and homemade, since I don't care for gum.

I like some of Dave & Andy's ice creams, but overall, their flavors aren't very flavorful.

It's the cones, not the ice cream.

It's fun to go to Klavon's for an ice cream soda, especially now that Ma Klavon isn't allowed to smoke anymore.

Mercurio's

It's a family business based in Kittanning but they have a store in Shadyside on Walnut Street.

They even got a story in the PG.

Kittanning family scoops up honors - and fans - for its cool concoctions
Mercurio's is probably my favorite place. It's real gelato.

Nothing is more hateful in the entire Pgh. ice cream scene than that Queen of Bogusity Rita and her so called "gelati" which is just a mixture of her "ice" chemicals and her "custard" chemicals. I wish she would go out of business. I hate Rita's as much as some people here hate, I don't know, people who live in Section 8 housing, or teachers. Or even...Cranberry.

When I lived in Cleveland, I liked Handel's Homemade Ice Cream &*Yogurt

Around here, they're in Chippewa and West Mifflin. I heard one is opening somewhere up in the North Hills (maybe McCandless Crossing?)

I was gonna ask if you guys had a Handel's. Handel's is based in Youngstown, but has really started franchising in recent years. I heard a rumor once that you had to be from the Youngstown area to own one, but i doubt that's true.
