Has anyone moved away from Western PA and miss it less than you expected? (Pittsburgh: homes, neighborhood)

I believe you may have misunderstood my intention. It wasn't to stir any pot. I struggle with this issue, which is why I purposely came to the Pittsburgh forum to see if any other former Western PA'ers have experienced what I'm feeling.
Don't miss it at all. Moved back for five years to help my folks and couldn't wait to leave again. Sorry, I hate the snow and cold...and the depressing overcast weather...and the OLD depressing cities with falling down bridges etc. The city itself is pretty especially at night and I like the Steelers but you can find a group of fans everywhere. I think I was born in the wrong place ! smile We have lived all over the place and all I ever missed from Pa was family. And, I know that is the reason most people stay and I understand that. I just think theres so many people who never realize there are so many other places that are so much nicer in so many ways. I can feel the flames already. Sorry...I don't mean to hurt anyones feelings but most of the people I meet all over the US who are from there say they have no desire to ever go back. Not all though. I WILL say the city is so much better than when I grew up with the orange sky and soot everywhere. I am glad it is cleaned up and young people are finding it more and more of an interesting place to live and work. I am glad it has begun a come back. Not for me though. Right now (i know you are wondering,) I live in Greenville SC and everyone who visits us desires to live here. Can't say enough good things about it. A half hour from the mountains and four hours from the beach...I won't go on.

Ugh typical person who hates the city but still loves the Steelers . I hate Steeler fans so much.

Greenville does sound nice! I myself am not a big city type, but I moved to LA as my husband has lived here most of his life and wanted to stay here. Don't think I would have if it wasn't for him though. I don't miss Pgh. in the winter, but I still miss the city, especially the way it is now like you say. I left the area in 1974, so it was a long time ago. Left to my own choices, most likely I would have stayed somewhere on the east coast. You are an easy plane ride away if you have the desire to come back and visit. I'm still a Steeler fan myself and there are many fans out here too!

I switched from a Steelers fan to a Broncos fan on a moment's notice after about 28 years here. I was given some tickets to a Steelers/Broncos game, and when I got there to Invesco Field, I discovered I was a Broncos fan. I decided I belonged in Colorado.

I've been to Greenville once. Nice middle sized town with a world class theater (no joke), the Peace Center, and Main Street that most places should emulate. Atlanta might be able to because it has Peachtree Street as its defining "Main Street", but it will be hard to match Greenville's. Maybe it wouldn't work economically but Greenville should shut it down to car traffic and make it pedestrian. On weekends people stroll up and down it with baby carriages, etc. Does Pittsburgh have a "defining" street? Greenville is doing a pretty good job at mid-sized city urban planning.
But I'd never live in Greenville. A bit too small in terms of amenities although the Peace Center helps a lot with culture. Plus Greenville has that "small town" mindset which basically means, you'd better fit in. I'd take Atlanta over Greenville. Never been to Charlotte, but I've never cared for North Carolinians. Actually, I feel the same way about Colorado and Coloradans. Would never live there.
I guess we have gone "rogue" here but I have to ask mathman how long it has been since you have been here. Greenville is grown so much in the last few years. Theres every amenity you can imagine. You are correct about the downtown...it has been written up and pictured in every possible magazine. Its amazing. As is...yes, the Peace Center. But we also have the Bi-Lo center where we saw the Rockettes last yr. and other big names. We have a totally amazing Greenville little theater which has made national news. We got the only Imax theater in Sc recently. Bob Jones university is here (and others) which has a world class art gallery Some of the art is on loan to the Louvre. Plus a great new stadium and minor league baseball. Not to mention every store and restaurant imaginable. A Whole Foods and recently a Trader Joes. So...it is a medium sized city but with big city amenities. And, Greenville is one southern city that is the opposite of what you describe as "you better fit in". I was surprised at how diversified it is. There are sooooo many diverse people here it is crazy. I go to the pool in my neighborhood and meet people from France, Japan, Russia. There are a lot of businesses here such as Michelin and the BMW factory...and a lot of other jobs which attract diversity. The end. Can you tell we like it here. So much to offer.

I'm a Steeler fan currently living in another part of the country, and I denounce anybody who hates the Pittsburgh but continues to support its sports teams. It's utterly pointless. If you hate Pittsburgh, then do me a favor and hate everything about it, even the winning tradition of its sports teams.

Gotta love corporate welfare.
