Is Waldenbooks even still around?

I like Barnes and Noble better. Thier stores seemed to have better lighting. Borders always seemed too dark inside.

Nah, once the upgrade to Rt 28 is done, business will pick up there. Developers will also likely look to develop housing nearby, in one of the least developed areas of the county.

Barnes and Noble stores are indeed more attractive than Borders Books, but their actual inventory isn't close to a Borders Store. It's a triumph of style over substance.
Also B&N offers a whopping 10% discount if you join their rewards program. Whoppee! The soon to be gone Borders Rewards program was much better, and Borders often had good coupons, up to 40% or so.
I am very sad to see them disappear, as I spent much time, and money at the old South Hills location. Shame that they were mis-managed, and that they over-expanded. Thank God for Amazon!

I typically dislike megalith chains, but book stores are their own category (especially ones w/ coffee and good seating). I'm sad about this closing nationwide. Lots of jobs lost, too.

Yes, but as I mentioned before most of them have been rebranded to Borders.

Borders was the place where people knew about books. And in the 1970s, they had an amazing inventory system. It didn't really change that much from the 1970s. Plus, they stopped caring whether staff knew anything about books. And they couldn't adapt to that online thing. Hell, for several years their online site was just a portal for Amazon, a competitor! Basically mismanaged since 10-15 years ago.

Sad overall considering the history. Sad for workers losing their jobs. But at this point in time, they're just another mismanaged retail chain going under. Whatever Borders used to be as far as bookselling cred has been gone for years.

I never heard of them until the 90s

Good question. When I lived in CT I used to shop at both along with a couple of local independently owned stores. I have not seen one in years.
