I recently received a new job offer that would require me to work in Indiana, PA. Right now, I live in the North Hills, and the drive would be a bit long. My fiancee works in the Dormont area (part-time, ~30-35 hours/week. Will be seeking a full-time teaching position shortly, yes, I know that those are difficult to get). My job, for the first two years, would probably require a daily commute. After that, I would be working a 1 week on, 1 week off type schedule, at which point commuting becomes less of an issue.

I'm thinking the ideal location for us may be somewhere east of the Squirrel Hill tunnel. Regent Square area might not be bad... I don't think I would have an issue roughing out the commute from there for a while.

Any suggestions? ideas?

I used to live in Indiana and work in Fox Chapel.

I would say look even further out than you're thinking.

How about Murrysville? Not a bad drive to Indiana via RT 22 & Rt119. however, not an easy one to Dormont from there. Tough combination of work locations to deal with.

I think the best thing I can do is to take this link:

Dormont, PA to Indiana, PA - Google Maps

and choose a place somewhere along one of those routes.

Another factor is that I MAY be getting a company car... and the company MAY pay for my gas... which would favor a hefty commute to Indiana over a hefty commute to Dormont.

Could you possibly live in the Monroeville area and go along 22 or 286 then head north up to Indiana? May not be as big of a road but looks like a shorter distance. ??? Just taking the bottom of the triangle.

Good news, I just read in the morning paper that they are finally finished with the road work on Route 22. I guess it has been a straight fifteen years of construction and four hundred-fifty million dollars spent on the project!

I agree. I use to go up 286 to Indiana and it was definitely the shorter way. When I would be out a little further, I would shoot up 119.

I had dealt with this this conundrum before my partner was transferred from Indiana, PA to Evansville, IN. I work in Oakland and we decided on Murrysville and found a town home that put both of us roughly 45 minutes to work. Obviously I had the shorter distance, but had to deal with the commute while the trip to Indiana is reversed.

I drove several ways to Indiana from the city including 28, 422, 22, 119 and 286. 22/119 is pretty much 4 lanes now and traffic moves well (at least once you clear Murraysville). Sections of the 28/422 route are 1-lane and if you get unlucky you get stuck behind a school bus. 286/66/56 is a nice alternative to 22/119. One lane, but a shorter, more scenic drive. Ranked in terms of how I preferred them: 22/119 and 286 are about equal, 28/422 is a distant third.

Murrysville-Dormont: I still don't know the area well enough to know quicker ways, but you will have to deal with the parkway. At rush hour. Prepare to remain parked. The P12 runs commuter service from Downtown to Murrysville.

Something to possibly consider: something along 28 or with easy access to it. The commute from there to Dormont MIGHT be better than having to deal with the parkway.

Good luck, I wish I had some obvious suggestions but it just sounds like you're stuck in a bit of a pickle!

Yeah, right now I'm thinking that the route up 28 might be easier. Something around New Kensington or so...

Thanks for some of the insight on the routes to Indiana. I used to commute from the West Side area down to Canonsburg, so I'm familiar with some traffic areas, but not so much those with the Squirrel Hill tunnel. I still think Regent Square MIGHT be ok (long distance to Indiana, I know...) because it's only one exit from the tunnel.
